Write the price and the discount as they appear on the tag: 159.90 - 30%. The markup and margin functions handle pricing, and dividing by the remaining percent recovers the original price.
159.90 - 30% is the sale price. Several discounts in a row, 10 000 - 15% - 5%, each apply to the already reduced price, just as in a shop. To find the price before a discount, divide by what is left of the percent: 1 000 / (1 - 20%).
They are not the same. Markup is added on top of cost: markup(800; 1 000) gives 25%. Margin is the share of profit in the price: margin(800; 1 000) gives 20%. To price with a markup, write 800 + 25%.
| You type | You get |
|---|---|
| 111.93 | |
| 8 075 | |
| 1 250 | |
| 25% | |
| 20% | |
| 1 000 | |
| −30% |
No. The second discount applies to the already reduced price, so 10 000 - 15% - 5% = 8 075, while 10 000 - 20% = 8 000.
Markup is measured against cost, margin against the selling price. With a cost of 800 and a price of 1 000, the markup is 25% and the margin 20%.
Write change from 159.90 to 111.93 and you get −30%.
