Write a shift as it appears on the rota, 9:00 - 18:00, subtract the break, multiply by days and by the hourly rate. A night shift 22:00 - 6:00 gives 8 hours, not a negative number.
Two clock times with a dash are read as a range: 9:00 - 18:00 is 9 hours. Times can be added and subtracted, 8:15 + 7:45, multiplied by a number of days, worked * 22, and by a rate: worked * $25 gives the pay. For decimal hours on a timesheet, write 8:15 in hours.
A shift past midnight is counted correctly: 22:00 - 6:00 gives 8:00, and the note under the answer says “past midnight”. Keep the break on its own line and subtract it from every shift.
| You type | You get |
|---|---|
| 9:00 | |
| 8:00 | |
| 8:00 | |
| 25:00 | |
| $200 | |
| 8.25 h | |
| 1.5 h |
Write each shift on a line, or one typical shift multiplied: worked * 22. A total line adds up every shift on the sheet.
When the second time is later, the calculator reads a range from the first time to the second. When it is earlier, it reads a difference or an overnight shift, depending on how it is written. The note under the answer shows how the line was read.
Add “in hours”: 8:15 in hours gives 8.25 h, the format timesheets and payroll use.
